WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Cookies are small text files sent from the website to the user’s device (usually to the browser), where they are stored and then sent back to the website during the user’s next visit. A cookie cannot retrieve any other data from the user’s hard drive, transmit computer viruses, or acquire email addresses. Each cookie is unique to the user’s web browser. Cookies can be categorized as first-party or third-party, where “first-party” cookies are developed by the owner of the website itself, while “third-party” cookies are developed by third parties other than the website owner.

TYPES OF COOKIES

Regarding the types of cookies, there are various kinds:

• Analytics cookies, similar to technical cookies when used directly by the website manager to collect aggregated information about the number of users and how they visit the site, in order to improve site performance.
• Functionality cookies, which allow the user to navigate based on selected criteria (e.g., language, products selected for purchase) to improve the service provided to the user. The installation of these cookies does not require prior user consent.

Profiling Cookies: Profiling cookies aim to create user profiles and are used to send advertising messages in line with the user’s preferences expressed during online browsing. The use of profiling cookies requires the user’s consent. According to Directive no. 229 of May 8, 2014, the user must be able to authorize or deny consent for the installation of profiling cookies if they are present. In the case of third-party cookies, the site does not have direct control over individual cookies and cannot control them (neither install nor delete them directly). COOKIE DURATION

Cookies have a duration determined by the expiration date (or a specific action, such as closing the browser) set at the time of installation. Cookies can be:

• Temporary or session cookies: Used to store temporary information, allowing actions performed during a specific session to be linked and removed from the computer when the browser is closed.
• Persistent cookies: Used to store information, such as login names and passwords, to prevent the user from having to enter them again each time they visit a specific site. These remain stored on the computer even after the browser is closed. Session cookies, once the connection to the website is terminated, are not stored. The computer systems used for this website use temporary cookies.

MANAGING COOKIES

You can disable cookies on websites by downloading specific software such as Ghostery (https://www.ghostery.com) for your browser, which allows you to disable the use of individual cookies. Alternatively, you can activate “private browsing” mode, which allows you to browse without leaving traces of browsing data in your browser.
